As foretold in the last step, the eye outline is more indistinct. What happened is that the artist blended the whole side of the face, and with it, the eye was caught up in the process. This is an instance where you can consider that you are "priming the board" as master pastellist John Soloman Sandridge puts it. In the next step you can see the reason it is "primed;" it is so that the re-establishment of the eye outline can become more evident, more visible and easier to work with.
